There was a time when I looked excitedly toward opening day in baseball. This was a rite that exhilarated me every since I was 11 years old.
I will turn 63 this year.
There was a time when I would pour over the daily box scores like a research scientists studying his notes on his viral drug cultures in his laboratory.
I would follow the top hitters and pitchers and keep charts on what they would have to do the remainder of the season to hit that .330 batting average or reach 40 home runs or win 20 games. I did this because I had such a burning passion for the great American pastime. A game that was a woven part of the fabric of the American culture as the stars on Old Glory.
That has all changed.

Cardinals 94, Astros 92, Cubs 90
added 10/04 by Steve Cutchen
A pennant race of the most nerve-wracking kind. It will be best 2 of 3 at St. Louis for the division title. The loser could miss the playoffs. Baseball's Place as a Nation Recovers

Brower Showers Early
added 05/15 by Darrell Pittman and Susan Evans
A pitcher chased, his hopes lie waste. The wonders of Cincinnati shopping on a Sunday. Exhibitionism in the parking garage. Poetic justice. The trip home.

Just when you thought the situation was muddled...
added 05/03 by Darrell Pittman
Okay, I wasn't 'At The Game' this series. I watched the game on TV just like everyone else. But the good guys are at a critical watershed, and the situation is, in my view, even more muddled than before.

Move Along, Nothing to See Here
added 05/02 by Todd Brody
After two games at Shea, I've seen nothing to suggest that this team is any better than last year's team. And I'm wondering whether it is really worth the abuse that I subject myself going to see the Astros play at Shea -- especially with "Drawves -- Not a Fairy Tale" showing on HBO tonight.

Decision Time
added 04/29 by Darrell Pittman
Having personally watched Jose Lima's meltdown against the Florida Marlins on Friday night, I am convinced that it is time for the Astros to pull the plug on Lima and put him in the bullpen, and put Bottenfield in the rotation in his place.

It's closing time for Lima time
added 04/27 by Todd Brody
Yes, it's early in the season. Yes, he has only had four starts. But it is time for the Astros to get rid of Jose Lima, regardless of how he pitches tonight. And no one will be more sad than myself because Lima is a real throwback to the time when players actually cared about the fans.

Left-Handed Madness
added 04/25 by Todd Brody
I'm left-handed myself. I'm certainly not a self-hating lefty (although I do bat right-handed). Even my politics are left-leaning. But I simply cannot understand the fascination that Gerry Hunsicker has with left-handed pitchers. Just because a pitcher is left-handed does not make him Randy Johnson or Mike Hampton.

USA? Meet Wade Miller!
added 04/23 by Steve Cutchen
On ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, the Astros win a series clinching
game against the Central Division rivals St. Louis Cardinals. Wade
Miller stepped on the national stage and did nothing less than pitch
great, assuming the NL lead in strikeouts. But more important, this
was a game we would probably have lost last year.

The Long Grind Begins
added 03/01 by John Lauck
When he was a broadcaster for the Astros and needed to put some troublsome period for the ballclub in a broad perspective, Larry Dierker used to say of the major league baseball season that it was, more than anything else, long. Friends, ready or not, the long grind is once again upon us.

Thunder Off The Bench
added 01/31 by John Lauck
As a player for the Astros, there's one thing about Daryle Ward of which we can be certain: when he hits the ball, it goes a long way. Trouble is, for both Ward and the Astros' management, he needs to hit the ball far more often in 2001 in order to be considered successful.

Dotel Anybody, But Octavio's a Key Man
added 01/25 by John Lauck
With Shane Reynolds out until at least May (and perhaps longer) with a surgically-repaired knee, and Jose Lima's ability to regain his control and composure pitching at home and on the road under serious question, Octavio Dotel may emerge as the most important man in the Astros' revamped starting rotation.

The Five Men In
added 01/11 by John Lauck
Everybody knows that, going into the 2001 season, the Astros' most obvious weakness is their pitching staff. Everybody also knows that their strength is their outfield. But while GM Gerry Hunsicker has made several moves this off-season to shore up the pitching, and is working diligently to keep the powerhouse outfield intact for the next few years, not much attention has yet been paid to another part of the ball club that may be as crucial as any other part to the fortunes of the team this year: the infield.

A Hazy Shade of Winter

My timing is terrible. Just two days ago I sat down to write my next column about the team's lack of winter activity. Given the team's poor track record in previous winters, the title was going to be "No News is Good News".
