This Date in Astros History Dec 8, 2011 - Astros name Jeff Luhnow as their new General Manager, replacing Ed Wade who was fired after Thanksgiving along with President of Baseball Operations Tal Smith. Luhnow had been a vice president in the Cardinals system since 2003, specializing in player procurement and development. In his first day on the job, the Astros select Rhiner Cruz, a pitcher from the Mets farm system, in the Rule V draft and trade with the Red Sox for Cubs infield prospect Marwin Gonzalez.
