Luhnow had been a vice president in the Cardinals system since 2003, specializing in player procurement and development. In his first day on the job, the Astros select Rhiner Cruz, a pitcher from the Mets farm system, in the Rule V draft and trade with the Red Sox for Cubs infield prospect Marwin Gonzalez.
