Shawn Chacon made more headlines on his way out than he did when he was here. A veteran righthander with the Rockies, Yankees and Pirates, Chacon set a record for most starts with a no-decision to begin the 2008 season while holding the fifth spot in the Astros rotation but a few bad starts led to his demotion to the bullpen.

He didn't take it well. Chacon pouted and, at times, outright defied instructions to warm up in relief. When the insubordination became blatant, Manager Cecil Cooper took the problem to General Manager Ed Wade who confronted Chacon in the Astros clubhouse where Chacon grabbed Wade by the throat and had to be pulled off of him.

"He needed to know who he was dealing with," said a heated Chacon to the press afterwards. Chacon was released the next day.

This Date in Astros History

May 27, 2008 - Hunter Pence goes 5-for-5 and Miguel Tejada blasts a two-run homer to pace an 8-2 win in St. Louis behind seven strong innings from Shawn Chacon. The Astros and Cardinals are in a tie for second in the division behind Chicago.

Jun 26, 2008 - Astros release pitcher Shawn Chacon a day after he grabbed General Manager Ed Wade by the throat and threw him to the floor in a pre-game altercation. Chacon had become increasingly defiant after getting yanked in the first inning of a start in Milwaukee then later getting dropped from the starting rotation. On the field, the news was better in a 7-2 win over the Texas Rangers but a sour month had left the club in fifth place, five games below .500 at 37-42.
