Born in Morgantown, WV, Carpenter was converted from catcher after showing off a strong throwing arm. The Astros acquired him late in the 2010 season from the St. Louis Cardinals for IF Pedro Feliz. He rose quickly from A-ball to the majors in less than a year. Called up in mid-season, he posted a 1-3 record with one save and a 2.93 ERA in his rookie season.
