This Date in Astros History
Dec 10 1996 - Astros swap pitchers Todd Jones and Doug Brocail along with outfielder Brian Hunter and shortstop Orlando Miller to Detroit for pitchers Jose Lima, C.J. Nitkowski and Trever Miller along with catcher Brad Ausmus and first baseman Daryle Ward. Ausmus is the man Houston really wants but Lima and Ward eventually become major contributors.

Jun 07 1999 - Jose Lima runs his record to 10-2 with a complete-game victory over the White Sox, 8-2. Every Astro in the lineup gets at least one of Houston's 17 hits except, of course, for Lima who never bats. Daryle Ward is the Designated Hitter, which is used in American League parks.

Aug 29 1999 - Craig Biggio goes 4-for-5 with a homer and scores four times to lead a 10-4 drubbing of Florida. Daryle Ward, Lance Berkman and Ken Caminiti also leave the yard. Tony Eusebio adds three hits including two doubles. Mike Hampton wins his 17th.

Sep 14 1999 - Astros pound the Phillies, 12-2, to set a team-record twelve-game winning streak. Shane Reynolds smokes a two-run bomb off Paul Byrd for an early 3-0 lead, then a six-run fourth ices the game, capped by a two-run single from Daryle Ward . Amazingly, Houston can only gain 1-1/2 games on the Reds during their win streak and lead Cincinnati by four in the N.L. Central chase.

Sep 29 1999 - Daryle Ward blasts a two-run homer and Mike Hampton picks up his 21st win in a 4-1 triumph over Cincinnati. It moves Houston back into a tie with the Reds for the division lead with three games to play.

Oct 03 1999 - The Astros play their last regular-season game at the Astrodome and finish in style. A 9-4 triumph over the Dodgers clinches the N.L. Central crown. Mike Hampton becomes the first 22-game winner in club history. Daryle Ward's bases-loaded double in the first provides an early lift. Craig Biggio hits his 56th double. Afterwards, members of the 1965 Astros appear as well as the All-Time Astros squad before an enthusiastic packed house.

Oct 05 1999 - Astros get the jump on Atlanta in Game One of the N.L.D.S. with a 6-1 victory. Tony Eusebio gives Houston an early lead with an RBI single off Greg Maddux. The Braves tie it but Daryle Ward takes Maddux deep for a 2-1 edge. Ken Caminiti's three-run bomb in the ninth ices the game. Shane Reynolds gets the win.

Mar 30 2000 - Enron Field officially opens with a 6-5 exhibition win over the A.L. Champion New York Yankees, paralleling the feat that occured when the Astrodome opened in 1965. Daryle Ward's two-run homer caps a four-run eighth-inning rally to open up the Astros' new home in style. Jeff Bagwell earns the first hit in the new digs with a single off Roger Clemens.

Apr 28 2000 - Chris Holt one-hits the Brewers, 7-0. Jeff Bagwell, Richard Hidalgo and Daryle Ward support Holt with long balls. A second-inning single by Ron Belliard is the only Milwaukee safety.

Sep 09 2000 - Astros belt a club record seven home runs in a 14-4 bombfest at Wrigley Field. Tim Bogar, Richard Hidalgo and Lance Berkman each homer twice while Daryle Ward adds a solo shot. Bogar has a career day with four hits and five RBIs to drum the Cubs. Somehow, Jeff Bagwell misses the home run derby but he scores three times.

Apr 03 2001 - Craig Biggio returns from knee surgery in style with the first five-hit game of his career during an 11-3 Opening Day win against Milwaukee, scoring three times. Daryle Ward and Chris Truby belt homers.

May 02 2001 - Lance Berkman and Moises Alou slug back-to-back home runs in the tenth inning then hold on to nip the Mets, 6-5. Solo shots are the order of the day as Alou, Craig Biggio and Daryle Ward go yard in the eighth inning as well. Carlos Alfonso and Jay Payton play long ball for New York.

Aug 12 2001 - Homers from Lance Berkman, Jeff Bagwell, Daryle Ward and Vinny Castilla pace a 10-5 clubbing of Florida. Dave Mlicki allows three long balls but still coasts to the win. Houston moves within 1/2 game of division-leading Chicago.

Sep 05 2001 - Vinny Castilla blasts a homer and two doubles to drive in six and give the Reds the blues, 10-3. Daryle Ward and Jose Vizcaino also double twice. Dave Mlicki coasts to the easy victory.

Oct 12 2001 - Astros are swept by the Braves at Turner Field, 6-2, to close out another disappointing N.L.D.S, their third such fate at the hands of Atlanta in five years. Former Houston backup Paul Bako homers off Shane Reynolds and drives in three. Daryle Ward's two-run blast is the only response for the Astros.

Jun 22 2002 - Stunned by the death of ex-teammate Darryl Kile, Astro veterans Craig Biggio, Brad Ausmus and Jeff Bagwell sit out a game against the Seattle Mariners. But all come in to pinch hit as the game moves into extra innings with an emotional Bagwell singling home Julio Lugo with the winning run in the 12th for a 3-2 victory. Daryle Ward plates the other two runs. Ricky Stone wins in relief.

Jul 06 2002 - Daryle Ward becomes the first player to smash a home run into the Allegheny River as Houston bombs the Pirates, 10-2, at PNC Park. It's a grand slam too. Lance Berkman and Jeff Bagwell tag back-to-back shots. Nelson Cruz wins with six shutout innings.

Jan 25 2003 - Slugger Daryle Ward is traded to Los Angeles for minor league pitcher Ruddy Lugo, younger brother of infielder Julio Lugo. Ward teases fans with his home run potential but management loses patience after a five-year run where he swats 49 homers and bats .269 in 418 games.
