Nov 2, 1966:Orlando Merced is born in Hato Rey, PR. The outfielder-first baseman had been a thorn in Houston's side during several seasons with the Pirates. Merced spends three seasons in Houston (2001-2003) as a reserve, batting .262 with 15 home runs.
Nov 6, 1991:Jeff Bagwell is named N.L. Rookie of the Year, capturing 23 of 24 first place votes. His .294 average, 15 homers and 82 RBIs are just the first sign of things to come. The other vote goes to Pittsburgh's Orlando Merced.
Jun 10, 2001:Orlando Merced belts a two-out pinch-hit three-run homer in the top of the ninth to stun the Texas Rangers, 6-5, and take two of three in the first "Lone Star Series". Jay Powell picks up the win after blowing the save in the previous frame.
Aug 2, 2001:Orlando Merced cracks a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to tie the Mets then Moises Alou finishes the job in the tenth with an infield hit that scores Craig Biggio for a 4-3 triumph. Mike Williams, newly acquired from Pittsburgh, takes the win in relief.
Apr 2, 2003:Craig Biggio singles home the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth, completing a five-run rally that stuns Colorado, 8-7. Four straight singles and a double by Orlando Merced set the stage for Biggio's heroics. Billy Wagner is the surprise winner.
