Sep 15, 1985:Glenn Davis blasts a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth off Craig Lefferts for a 2-1 victory over San Diego. Jose Cruz notches the 2,000th hit of his career. Meanwhile, Joe Niekro is dealt to the New York Yankees for pitcher Jim Deshaies and two other prospects.
Aug 24, 1986:Jim Pankovits, filling in for an injured Bill Doran, goes 4-for-5 to lead the Astros past St. Louis, 5-1. Dickie Thon drives in two of the runs. Jim Deshaies and Aurelio Lopez team to scatter seven hits and strike out seven.
Sep 23, 1986:Jim Deshaies sets a modern major league mark by striking out the first eight Dodgers en route to a 4-0 shutout. Tommy Lasorda tries to spoil the fun by sending up pinch-hitter Larry See instead of the pitcher for the ninth out. See pops up. Deshaies finishes with a two-hitter and ten strikeouts.
Sep 24, 1986:Nolan Ryan follows Jim Deshaies' previous two-hitter with six innings of no-hit ball against the Giants before Mike Aldrete singles to break up the bid. Charley Kerfeld surrenders a hit in the ninth as the pair combine for a two-hit, 6-0 whitewash that clinches a tie for the N.L. West pennant. Glenn Davis belts his 30th home run of the season, the first Astro to hit that many since Jim Wynn in 1969.
Jun 27, 1987:Kevin Bass becomes the first Astro to collect four extra-base hits in a game. He gets a "cycle plus one", legging out his second double for his final hit of the game after earlier hitting a homer and a triple. Houston wins, 6-5, over the Giants as Larry Andersen saves it for Jim Deshaies.
Jun 26, 1988:Catcher Craig Biggio makes his major league debut in a 6-0 whitewash of San Francisco. He walks in the fourth and scores the game's final run after stealing second. Houston does all its damage on just three hits, aided by six walks. Jim Deshaies and Larry Andersen combine to blank the Giants on seven hits. Biggio will get his first hit three days later against Dodger ace Orel Hershiser.
May 2, 1989:Kevin Bass drills four hits while Glenn Davis and Bill Doran drive home three runs each during a 12-4 mauling in Philadelphia. Jim Deshaies gets the win and adds an RBI single to boot.
May 12, 1989:Jim Deshaies goes the distance with a four-hitter as Houston trips the Cubs, 3-1.Gerald Young and Billy Hatcher execute a double steal for the game's first run, with Young crossing the plate.
Sep 21, 1990:Mike Simms' first big league homer in the tenth inning scalps the Braves, 4-3. Jim Deshaies benefits when Ken Caminiti takes a grounder from Francisco Cabrera and sends it around the horn to Dave Rohde and Simms for a triple play to squelch a threat.
Sep 26, 1990:Franklin Stubbs drives in six as the Astros blast the Dodgers, 10-1. Jim Deshaies hurls a four-hitter. Stubbs clubs his 22nd homer, a three-run shot, to break open a game that saw six Astros score after reaching base on walks.
Jan 16, 2001:Jim Deshaies, former Astro lefthander and current broadcaster, receives one vote in the Hall of Fame balloting. It comes from local sportswriter John Lopez. Deshaies receives notoriety for a humorous website openly promoting his candidacy for Cooperstown. At least he would have worn an Astros cap.
