Sep 21, 1979:Bruce Bochy singles home Craig Reynolds with the game-winner as Houston clips the Reds, 3-2, in 13 innings, closing within 1-1/2 games of Cincinnati in the N.L. West race. Terry Puhl plates the other two runs with singles off Tom Seaver. J.R. Richard fans 15 in eleven innings and shocks everyone with a bunt single in the tenth. Richard presses his luck by trying to steal second where Johnny Bench's throw arrives well ahead of him.
Oct 11, 1980:In a game of bizarre moments, Philadelphia beats Houston, 5-3 in ten innings, to even the N.L.C.S. at 2-2. Pete Rose crashes into Bruce Bochy at home plate to score the winning run. The game features a fourth-inning triple play by Houston that was reduced to two outs after pitcher Vern Ruhle grabs a soft liner by Garry Maddox and tosses to first. Houston also loses a run when Gary Woods is called out for leaving third base early on a sixth-inning fly ball by Luis Pujols. In addition, an Astro outfield assist is ruled to occur just after Rose crosses the plate, allowing his run to count.
Feb 11, 1981:Catcher Bruce Bochy is dealt to the Mets for two minor leaguers. Bochy spent parts of three seasons with the Astros and is best remembered for the forearm he took from Pete Rose in Game 4 of the 1980 N.L.C.S. Later he becomes the manager for the San Diego Padres and defeats Houston in the 1998 N.L.D.S.
Nov 11, 1998:Larry Dierker is named National League Manager of the Year, outpacing San Diego's Bruce Bochy, whose team eliminated Houston in the playoffs. He's the second Astro skipper to claim the award.
