One of many young players rushed to the majors in those expansion years, William Christopher Zachary pitched in 22 games as a 19-year-old for the Colt .45s in 1963. He made brief appearances with Houston in the next four seasons, finishing Houston run with a 6-16 record and a 4.64 ERA in 46 games.
Purchased by the expansion Kansas City Royals in 1969, Zachary pitched in eight games for them then was traded to St. Louis two years later. He had brief appearances with the Tigers and Pirates after that.
The Tennessee native had a 10-29 record with two saves and a 4.57 ERA over parts of nine seasons. Zachary passed away on April 19, 2003 in his Knoxville hometown of cancer.
