Born in California, York was drafted by the Kansas City Royals and spent two seasons with them beginning in 1970. He was traded to Houston for slugger John Mayberry. Expected to be a closer for the Astros, York struggled to produce a 9-11 record with seven saves and a 4.19 ERA over four seasons. He was sold to the Yankees in 1976 and pitched three games for them before his release.

For his big league career, York crafted a 16-17 record with 10 saves and a 3.79 ERA.
