Born in California, York was drafted by the Kansas City Royals and spent two seasons with them beginning in 1970. He was traded to Houston in a trade for slugger John Mayberry. Expected to be a closer for the Astros, York struggled to produce a 9-11 record with seven saves and a 4.19 ERA over four seasons. He was sold to the Yankees in 1976 and pitched three games for them before his release.
For his big league career, York crafted a 16-17 record with 10 saves and a 3.79 ERA.
