A speedy infielder from Alabama, Yelding was originally drafted by Toronto, claimed by the Cubs in the Rule V draft then picked up on waivers by Houston. He made his debut with the Astros in 1989, hitting .233 in 70 games. Yelding had his career year in 1990 when he hit .254 and swiped 64 bases. Moved to centerfield, his hitting continued to decline and he was dealt back to the Cubs in 1993.
For his four seasons in Houston, Yelding batted .249 with two homers and 86 steals. Including his final big league season in Chicago, he was a .244 hitter with three homers and 89 steals.
