A native of Wisconsin, Wiedenbauer was selected by the Astros in the 7th round of the 1976 draft. A September call-up during the 1979 season as a 20-year-old, he got into four games and came through with 4-for-6, including a double and two RBIs in his only big league action.
Despite his brief trial, he didn't hit well enough in the minors so the Astros converted him to a pitcher, although he never returned to the majors. He later managed in the Astros' farm system for four seasons.
