A native of Rhode Island, Wheeler was drafted by Tampa Bay in 1996 and debuted with them in 1999. He was signed by the Mets in 2003, he was dealt to the Astros the next season and became a key member of the bullpen during two postseason runs. Over his four years with the Astros he had a 6-12 record with a 3.02 ERA and 23 saves to go with a 1-0 record in the playoffs. He was on the mound when the Astros wrapped up Game 6 of the 2005 NLCS in St. Louis that sent the Astros to the World Series.

Dealt in mid-season back to Tampa Bay for Ty Wigginton, he has served the same set-up role with the Rays and reached the World Series again in 2008. Through 2009, Wheeler's big league record is 21-37 with 40 saves and a 3.88 ERA. He is also married to the daughter of Tampa Bay and former Astros broadcaster Dewayne Staats.
