The Alabama native was originally drafted by the Athletics and was released by the Dodgers before he signed with the Astros in 1992. Veres (pron: VEERS) debuted with the Astros in 1994 and spent two seaons in Houston. He had an 8-4 record with two saves and a 2.31 ERA as he developed into a dependable set-up reliever.

Traded to Montreal for Sean Berry, Veres moved on to Colorado, St. Louis and the Cubs, compiling a 36-35 record with 95 saves and a 3.44 ERA over ten seasons. Veres pitched in four consecutive post-seasons between 2000 and 2003.
