A classic "good field no hit" shortstop, the native of Monterrey, Mexico made his debut with the Astros in 1968. He hit .218 with two homers over three seasons in Houston. He was dealt to the Cubs after the 1970 season for prospect Roger Metzger in a trade that some saw as a make-up for the Joe Pepitone situation the previous summer.
Torres hit .224 as a Cub then was traded to Montreal where he hit .155 in 83 games during 1972. Sold back to the Astros in 1973, Torres hit .091 in 38 games and was traded to the White Sox. He resurfaced in 1975 with the Padres and hit a career-high .259 in 112 games. He stayed another year and spent his last big league season with the expansion Blue Jays in 1977.
For his Houston career, Torres hit .206 and for his nine-year career, he batted .216 with 18 homers.
