A 12th-round pick of the Astros in 1978, the USC alum couldn't crack the regular lineup but spent time as a reserve in the outfield and at first base with Houston between 1981 and 1985. In 107 games as an Astro, Tolman hit .173 with five homers. Signed by the Tigers after Houston released him, he lasted two more seasons there. Overall, he hit .168 for his career and never hit above .200 in any of his seven big league seasons.

After retirement as a player, Tolman spent many years as a coach, scout and minor league manager. He managed the Jackson (MS) Generals when they were the Astros' AA affiliate. Tolman's last position was as a special assistant with the Cleveland Indians, for whom he also coached under Manny Acta.

Tolman passed away due to complications from Parkinson's Disease on June 3rd, 2021 in Tucson, AZ at age 65.
