Born: Jan 14, 1951
A native of Los Angeles, Thomas was a first-round pick of the Astros in the 1969 winter draft and he went hitless in five at bats as a 20-year-old call-up in 1971 for Houston. Thomas was then sent to San Diego as part of the deal to acquire pitcher Dave A. Roberts.
He played every position but pitcher and switch-hit, earning a reputation as an ultimate utility player. His journey took him from San Diego to San Francisco then Los Angeles, Montreal, California and Philadelphia. In 15 seasons, he compiled a .249 average with 43 homers and 140 steals.
