A native of Beeville, TX, Taubensee was a highly-regarded catching prospect when he was traded to the Astros from Cleveland after the 1991 season for outfielder Kenny Lofton. The lefty-hitting backstop wasn't bad but he was no Kenny Lofton. In a little over two seasons in Houston, Taubensee hit .234 with 14 homers as he shared time behind the plate with Scott Servais.

Traded to Cincinnati in 1995, he played there for seven years before spending one final season back with the Indians where his big league career began. Over 11 seasons, he hit .273 with 94 homers.
