A Louisiana native who seemed to improve with age, Springer started with the Yankees then pitched for the Angels and Phillies before he came to the Astros in 1997 where he posted a 3-3 record with three saves and a 4.23 ERA. Claimed in the expansion draft by Arizona, Springer migrated from there to Atlanta, back to Arizona then St. Louis before returning to Houston for three seasons (2004-2006), helping the Astros reach the playoffs in two of those seasons.
Springer's career year appeared to come the following season when he went 8-1 with a 2.18 ERA as he helped the Cardinals reach the World Series in 2007. Since then, he's pitched for the Athletics and Rays. Through 2009, he has compiled a 36-45 mark with nine saves and a 4.52 ERA over 17 seasons. As an Astro, he had an 8-9 record with a 4.03 ERA.
