A reserve outfielder with the Braves, the Pennsylvanian was claimed by the Colt .45s in the expansion draft and was a regular in Houston until he was traded during the 1965 season. Spangler was a .265 hitter with the Colts, hitting 14 homers and stealing 20 bases. He was traded to the Angels for pitcher Don Lee.
After two partial seasons in California, Spangler was signed by the Cubs and played with them through 1971. Over 13 big league seasons, he batted .262 with 21 homers and 37 steals.
