A native of Shiner, TX, slender Sembera was known as "The Pencil". He signed with the Colt .45s out of Trinity University in 1961 and reached the majors in 1965. In three seasons with the Astros, he compiled a 3-9 record with four saves and a 4.14 ERA.
Picked by the expansion Montreal Expos in the Rule V draft, Sembera pitched two partial seasons in Canada and went 0-2 with two saves and a 6.13 ERA in 28 games. Overall, he totaled a 3-11 record with a 4.70 ERA and six saves over five seasons.
He later served as a scout for the Seattle Mariners and passed away on June 15, 2005 in Shiner at the age of 63.
