David Wayne Roberts was an overall number one draft pick of the Padres in 1972 from the University of Oregon who was brought up to the majors the same year. The following season was his career year when he hit .286 with 21 homers and 64 RBIs. But his career fell off notably after that and he remained in the league due to his versatility as much as anything.

Tried at catcher, he was traded to the Texas Rangers where he played nine different positions (all but pitcher, including as DH) during the 1979 campaign. After another year in Arlington, Roberts left for free agency and was signed by the Astros on a rather foolish contract. Injuries held him to 27 games where he hit .241 with one homer.

Houston dealt him to Philadelphia the next year which was his final one in the majors. For his career, Roberts hit .239 over ten seasons with 49 homers and 27 steals.
