The winner of the 2014 Golden Spikes Award presented to the best player in college baseball, Reed was was the first player picked in the second round of that year's draft. As a two-way player at the University of Kentucky, Reed led the NCAA with 23 home runs while going 12-2 with a 2.09 ERA.
Drafted as a first-baseman, not a pitcher, the Astros assigned the 6-foot 4-inch, 275-pound lefty to Tri-City of the New York Penn League to start his career. Reed quickly advanced through the ranks, slugging over .500 at every level and winning the California League MVP Award along the way. After a 59-game stint at AAA to start the 2016 season, Reed was called up to the big leagues in June.
