Nicknamed "Stinger", the South Carolina native was an effective reliever and spot starter during eight seasons in Houston. He made his debut in 1965 and had another brief trial in 1966 before coming up to the Astros for good in 1968. The year before, Ray was traded to the Mets but, after not being able to agree on compensation, the Mets traded him back - perhaps becoming the first player to be traded for himself. Ray's career year was 1971 when he compiled a 10-4 record with three saves and a sparkling 2.12 ERA. While an Astro, his overall record was 42-27 with 23 saves and a 3.52 ERA. He spent one additional season with Detroit before his big league career ended. |
