James Willard Powell was a first-round pick of the Orioles in 1993 who came up with the expansion Florida Marlins in 1995. Powell was 15-9 with seven saves as a Marlin before he was traded to the Astros for catcher Ramon Castro in July of 1998.

Powell jumped into the set-up role behind Billy Wagner in the Astros' bullpen as they won division titles in 1998 and 1999. Over four seasons in Houston, Powell compiled an 11-10 record with eight saves and a 4.02 ERA. Houston dealt him to Colorado for lefthander Ron Villone in 2001.

After the Rockies, Powell spent three seasons with the Rangers and five games with the Braves before his big league career came to an end. Overall, he posted a 36-23 mark with a 4/17 ERA and 22 saves over 11 seasons.
