A New Hampshire native, Plantier teased fans with his explosive home run power. He was rushed up the Red Sox farm chain and first appeared in the majors in 1990 at age 21. He was dealt to San Diego two years later where he had his career year in 1993, hitting 34 homers and driving in 100 runs but he fell off the next year and was then traded to the Astros in the December 1994 mega-trade that included Ken Caminiti, Steve Finley, Derek Bell and Ricky Gutierrez.

Plantier spent much of his time as an Astro on the disabled list and was traded back to the Padres in mid-season for pitchers Rich Loiselle and Jeff Tabaka. While an Astro, he hit .250 with four homers in 22 games.

Plantier kicked around with the Athletics and Cardinals, as well as the Padres, but was never able to reclaim the old magic. Over his eight big league seasons, he hit .243 with 91 homers
