Considered a top product of the Astros' Venezuelan academy, the first baseman had a big problem getting to Houston - he wore #5. Petagine was 0-for-8 in a brief trial in 1993 with the Astros then was traded to the Padres in the mega-deal that included Ken Caminiti, Steve Finley and Derek Bell. From there, he kicked around with the Padres, Mets, Reds, Red Sox and Mariners but could never seem to find his groove. The closest he came was with Boston in 2005 when he returned to the bigs after a seven-year absence and hit .281 in 18 games but, at age 34, he was mostly spent. For his career, Petagine hit .227 with 12 homers in seven seasons. |
