Born: Sep 9, 1952
Acquired in a mid-season deal for outfielder Omar Moreno in 1983, the Tyler, TX native was a center fielder who had power and speed yet never made a significant impact. Mumphrey hit .336 in 44 games to close out that season then hit .290 and .277 over the next two years and actually earned an All-Star berth in 1984. For his 2-1/2 seasons as an Astro, he batted .291 with 18 homers.
Mumphrey also spent time with the Cardinals, Padres, Yankees and Cubs in a 15-year career. Overall, he hit .289 with 70 homers and 174 RBIs but is perhaps the most anonymous All-Star in franchise history.
