Born in Punxsatawney, PA, known annually for its Groundhog's Day, Mizerock was a first-round pick of the Astros in 1979. He could never win a starting job with Alan Ashby around but he had three short stays in the bigs with the Astros, hitting .181 in 92 games.

After he was released in 1986, Mizerock signed with the Expos and then the Braves where he spent his last eleven games in the majors, hitting .222. For his career, he had a .186 average and figuratively never saw his shadow.
