A native of Florida, McGriff came up with the Reds and played in parts of four seasons with them. The catcher came to Houston in return for Bill Doran late in the 1990 season. He got into four games and went hitless in five trips to the plate for the Astros.

After being released the following season, McGriff kicked around with the Angels, Blue Jays, Marlins and Cardinals to end his career. His overall stats were a .209 average with three homers and 30 RBIs.

Terry was related to star ballplayers Fred McGriff and Charles Johnson but could not match them in baseball success. McGriff provided an interview to Astros Daily.
