A first-round choice of the Astros in 1967, the slugging first baseman from Detroit made his big league debut at age 19 the following year. Fast-tracked through the minors, Mayberry played parts of four seasons with Houston but did not realize his potential until he was traded to Kansas City after the 1971 season for a pair of relievers. During that time, he hit .191 with 12 homers.

In his first year in Kansas City, he bettered all of that and became a two-time All-Star who finished second in the AL MVP race in his career year of 1975. After six seasons as a Royal, Mayberry played five seasons in Toronto and part of a final season with the Yankees. Overall, in 15 seasons, Mayberry batted .253 with 255 homers. He'd have to rank in the top five Astros to have been traded away too soon.
