Martin made his big league debut with the Astros in 1997 where he posted a 5-3 record and two saves with a 2.09 ERA. The expansion Arizona Diamondbacks claimed Martin in the draft but he was then sent to the Indians before he could play for the new club.

After that, the lefty pitched for the Mets, the Devil Rays, the Dodgers, the Braves and the Rockies over 11 seasons where he compiled a record of 11-9 with a 4.92 ERA.
