The Puerto Rican was an All-Star with the Red Sox in 1965 but was traded the following spring to Houston for Eddie Kasko. In his final big league start, Mantilla hit .219 with six homers.
His career began with more promise, playing for the Milwaukee Braves in the 1957 and 1958 World Series. Spending most of his time as a utiltiy infielder, he became a Met in the expansion year of 1962 then moved to Boston for three seasons. For his 11 big league seasons, Mantilla hit .261 with 89 homers.
