After four partial seasons with the Red Sox, the Oregon native was traded to the Astros before the 2012 campaign. Lowrie again suffered injuries but batted .244 with 16 homers in just 97 games.

Just before Spring Training 2013, the Astros traded Lowrie, along with Fernando Rodriguez, to the Oakland A's for Chris Carter, Brad Peacock, and Max Stassi. Jed played for the 2013-14 A's, continuing his fine shortstop work with a combined OPS of .738.

In December 2014, Lowrie signed as a free agent back with the Astros for 2015. Lowrie had a torrid April while the team opened the season on a 15-7 tear, but injured his thumb while sliding, requiring surgery. He returned to the first-place Astros just in time for the stretch run for the division pennant, but moved to third base because über-prospect Carlos Correa had been promoted from AAA Fresno to play shorstop in June.
