Born: Aug 7, 1929
Don Larsen will always be remembered for the perfect game he pitched for the Yankees on October 8, 1956, against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series, but nothing else in his otherwise unremarkable career could ever measure up.
He reached the World Series again in 1962 with the Giants, defeating the Yankees in relief on the sixth anniversary of his perfect game.
Larsen hit well for a pitcher with a lifetime .242 average and 14 career home runs, and was in fact used as a pinch-hitter 66 times and collected 12 hits.
Larsen compiled a 4-8 record with Houston in 1964-65 with a 2.40 ERA in the downward spiral of his career. He retired in 1967 after a brief stint with the Cubs.
