After a long career as a utility infielder with the Giants and Cardinals, the Whitey Herzog protege was hired in 1986 to manage the Astros and responded with a West Division title. It was all downhill from there and he was fired after the 1988 season. He posted a 254-232 record in three seasons as the Houston manager.
