A third-round pick of the Astros in 1974, the highly-touted catcher received three short tours with the Astros before playing 59 games with Houston in 1982. He was sent to Cincinnati the following spring for Bill Dawley and Tony Walker. After three seasons as a back-up with the Reds, Knicely spent his final two seasons with the Phillies and Cardinals.

Overall, he hit .213 with 12 homers over eight seasons.
