The native New Yorker was originally picked by the Mets but was claimed by the Florida Marlins in the 1992 Expansion Draft and saw his first major league action the following year. Released after three seasons, he was signed by the Astros as a free agent for the 1996 campaign. He registered a 1-0 record with a 5.54 ERA in nine games while with Houston.

Johnstone continued his career with the Giants and A's before retirement. His career record was 15-19 with a 4.01 ERA and three saves over eight seasons.
