A hard thrower with control problems, the former top draft choice of the Rangers always flashed promise but never showed consistency. After stops with Texas, Arizona and San Diego, Johnson signed with Houston for the 2003 season. He made three starts in four appearances and posted an 0-1 record with a 5.87 ERA before abruptly retiring in July after a poor performance. For his career, Johnson was 2-4 with a 6.62 ERA. He struck out 68 in 77 innings but walked 53.
Johnson attempted a comeback with Atlanta in 2006 but did not make the parent club and was released after the season.
