A native of North Carolina, Howard played briefly with the Brewers in 1973 before he was dealt to the Astros just before the 1974 season. In five seasons with the Astros, the outfielder hit .252 with six homers and 60 steals in 450 games.

Howard passed away on December 17, 2022 in Humble, TX.
