Carlos Enrique Hernandez was a lefthander signed from Venezuela. He made his way through the Astros farm system quickly and made his big league debut at age 21 during the 2001 season. He started three games, winning one game and allowing just two earned runs.

The next year, he made 21 starts and posted a 7-5 record but landed on the disabled list when he jammed his shoulder diving into second base. After a year of rehab, he came back in 2004 to earn a 1-3 record. Hernandez tried several comebacks but could not return to the majors. His career ended with a 9-8 record and a 4.54 ERA, all with Houston, but his shoulder injury stifled talent that could have made him an effective pitcher for many seasons.
