The North Carolina native was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1965 with Cincinnati and was a starter with the Reds from then until 1971 when he was traded to Houston in the deal that sent Joe Morgan to Cincinnati. Helms was a two-time All-Star with the Reds.
In four seasons with the Astros, Tommy hit .269 with 14 homers but was more known for his steady infield glove. Those years (1971-1974), Houston had others to carry the load on offense.
Helms was swapped to the Pirates for Art Howe and finished his career with the Red Sox. Over his 14 seasons, he hit .269 with 34 homers.
