A Brooklyn, NY native, Heist made his big league debut as a 32-year-old with the Chicago Cubs in 1960. Claimed by the Colt .45s in the 1961 expansion draft, Heist played the inaugural season in Houston. He batted .222 in 27 games in his final big league season.

For his career, he hit .255 with eight homers in 177 games. After his retirement, Heist became a coach, working in the Astros' system in 1966 and 1967. Heist passed away on October 2, 2006 in Tahlequah, OK, three days short of his 79th birthday.
