A highly regarded hitter in the minor leagues, Heep was a second-round draft choice of Houston in 1978. The San Antonio native's greatest gift to the Astros was being trade bait for pitcher Mike Scott who struggled as a Met but developed a split-finger fastball and became a Cy Young Award pitcher for the Astros.

While with Houston, Heep hit .246 with four homers over four seasons as a reserve first baseman/outfielder. Besides the Mets, he also played for the Red Sox and Braves. For his career, he hit .257 over 13 seasons in the majors. Heep appeared with four playoff teams and was on two World Champions. He was also used as an emergency pitcher twice - with the Dodgers in 1988 and with the Red Sox in 1990.
