A native of Philadelphia, Harris was a first-round pick of the Astros in 1968. He got into 22 games as an Astro, posting a 1-1 record with a 6.32 ERA over the 1970 and 1971 seasons.

He was sent to the Mets along with outfielder Rich Chiles for outfielder Tommie Agee but did not appear with them or another big league club over the rest of his career.
