A fourth overall draft choice in 1966, the Los Angeles product debuted with the Astros in 1969 and produced an 11-10 record in his rookie campaign. His 200 strikeouts that year contributed to a MLB record for team strikeouts.

Griffin struggled with arm injuries and finished eight seasons in Houston with a 45-60 record, three saves and a 4.20 ERA. He was waived midway though the 1976 season and was claimed by San Diego. Griffin proceded to pitch for the Padres, Giants, Angels and Pirates through the rest of his 14 big league seasons.

His career totals were 77-94, 10 shutouts, five saves and a 4.07 ERA. Griffin also compiled 1054 strikeouts although he never came close to the 200 he posted in his rookie year.
