The Dominican infielder was a reserve infielder for the Cardinals, Pirates and Angels before he came to the Astros in a mid-season deal in 1966 for a minor leaguer. He batted .264 with three homers for Houston over the next four years.

Gotay got steady work for the Astros when Joe Morgan had a military commitment in 1967 and responded with a .288 average and one hit in eight consecutive trips to the plate.

But teammates remember him more for some of his odd quirks. Rumored to practice voodoo, he was Pittsburgh star Roberto Clemente's roommate on the road until Clemente begged the Pirates to room him with anyone else.

Gotay once had a sandwich he stuffed into his back pocket during a game. When he had to break up a double play, Gotay slid and the sandwich fell out of his pants, causing the opposing shortstop to slip and fall on the play.

His big league career ended after the 1969 season. Gotay passed away on July 4th, 2008 in Ponce, DR.
