Catcher Johnny Edwards was acquired after the 1967 season for pitcher Dave Giusti. A three-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glover in recent seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, Edwards brought quality play and stability to a position for which it was sorely needed for Houston.
Edwards caught an incredible 151 games in 1969, a total which still easily stands as the single-season franchise record. Like most Astros catchers, he wasn't much of a hitter. His best offensive season came in 1972 when he batted .268 with 5 homers. But Edwards threw out an impressive 48% of would-be basestealers in 1969 (52 SB, 49 CS), giving a good indication of his defensive value to the team.
In six seasons as an Astro, Edwards batted .237 with 25 homers. The Ohio State product spent his last season in the majors with Houston in 1974.
