Originally signed by the Yankees, Dukes was dealt to the Braves before being traded to Houston in 1966. In two seasons, the righthander compiled a 2-4 record with five saves and a 4.60 ERA with the Astros.
He had one memorable night on April 15, 1968. He had been called up from AAA that afternoon and chose to drive to Houston from Nashville where his Oklahoma City team had been playing. When he reached Dallas, he tuned into the game on the radio and realized he might be needed in the marathon contest so he sped down the interstate, coming within 50 miles of the Astrodome when the game finally ended at 1:37 a.m.
Dukes was claimed by San Diego in the 1968 expansion draft and closed out his career with the Padres, Orioles and Angels before retiring.
