A second round choice of the Astros in 1970, Cosgrove spent parts of five seasons with Houston from 1972-1976, compiling a 12-11 record with eight saves and a 4.03 ERA.

He was claimed by the Indians in the Rule 5 draft and also was in the farm systems of the Blue Jays and Angels before retiring although he never returned to the majors after leaving Houston.
